Welcome to the Roam Africa Roadside Assist initiative
« on: September 30, 2014, 12:17:10 PM »
Dear Roam Africa Members,

As some of you may know I started a Roadside Assist program many years ago - with some success.
It was dependent on a lot of manual processing and worked on a clunky web list. It was far from ideal.

I've been thinking about reviving the program for a long time now and this is what I've come up with.
It will now run seamlessly inside the forum and provide a visual map of where members are based.
As before the concept is based on a volunteer service for Roam Africa members by Roam Africa members.
At the moment I don't know for certain whether the system will work (and keep working) but I'm willing to give it a go.

Welcome to Roam Africa Roadside Assist
As bikers we are especially vulnerable during roadside incidents.
Whether it's something as simple as running out of fuel, a flat tyre or something serious like mechanical breakdown or even an accident.
A community like Roam Africa is the ideal support base for such emergencies when travelling by bike.
The truth is you don't even need to be far from home to get into trouble. Please support this initiative as you never know when it will be you needing help. There's a wonderful comfort in the knowledge that around the next corner is someone you can count on in an emergency - no matter where you may find yourself.

This initiative is based on a volunteer service for Roam Africa members by Roam Africa Members.
Please understand that by no means should a support network such as this remove the responsibility from yourself to be prepared for emergencies - especially relating to minor issues such as running out of fuel or dealing with flat tyres.

JOINING THE GROUP:

In the forum menu go to Profile >> Modify Profile >> Group Membership

Under Available Groups click on Request Membership next to Roadside Assistance.

On the next page (BEFORE SUBMITTING THE REQUEST) please provide the following details as per the instruction:
- Real Name
- Tel Number
- Home Town
- Area
- Type of assistance offered and any other general info

MAKING USE OF SERVICE:

After your request is processed you will receive an email confirming your group membership.
You will then be able to see a new menu item called "Member Map"

On this page you will find all members' (who are part of the Roadside Assistance group) locations plotted on a Google Map interface.
You can scroll / zoom the map to the area closest to you and find a member nearby or pick a name from the list on the right.
Select the pin or the member closest to your area to display the Member Profile. By clicking on the chosen members Name their complete Profile page will display Roadside Assistance contact details as provided.

ONLY members of this group will have access to the map and the Profile page of members.
Most mobile browsers will display the above without any problem.

LEAVING THE GROUP:
You are free to leave this group at any time by visiting the forum menu Profile >> Modify Profile >> Group Membership
Under Current Groups click on Leave Group next to Roadside Assistance.
Please note that although access to the service will be removed automatically you will need to also send a PM to an Administrator to confirm that your account have been removed from the map and that your contact details will not be visible any further.

CHANGE OF LOCATION / DETAILS:
Leave the group as above and follow the process to re-apply for membership of the group providing your updated location and / or contact details.

Nice one! Looking forward to checking this out - although I hope never to need to use it...

Awesome initiative!
Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting: "Holy shit!! What a ride!!"
